Build Strong Java, Problem-Solving & AP Computer Science Skills

AP Computer Science A is a rigorous programming course focused on Java, object-oriented programming, algorithm development, and computational problem-solving. Students learn not only how to write code, but also how to analyze problems, design solutions, test and debug programs, and apply programming concepts independently.

The course works alongside the student’s school curriculum, providing additional instruction and practice with challenging concepts, assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests throughout the school year.

Special emphasis is placed on problem-solving and code application. Students may quickly understand what a loop, conditional statement, method, or class does, but learning when and how to combine these concepts to solve unfamiliar problems takes significant practice. Students develop this deeper computational thinking throughout the program.

The goal is to help students succeed in their AP Computer Science A course, strengthen their Java foundation, and prepare confidently for the AP CSA exam.

What Students Will Learn

• Java Fundamentals
  Work with variables, data types, expressions, operators, strings, objects, and methods.
• Selection and Iteration
  Use conditional statements, Boolean expressions, loops, and algorithms to solve problems.
• Object-Oriented Programming
  Design classes, create objects, write constructors and methods, and apply encapsulation and abstraction.
• Data Collections
  Work with arrays, ArrayList objects, two-dimensional arrays, searching, sorting, and recursive methods.
• Algorithm Development
  Design, implement, analyze, and improve algorithms for increasingly complex problems.
• Testing and Debugging
  Identify errors, trace program execution, test code, and make corrections efficiently.
• AP Exam Preparation
  Practice AP-style multiple-choice and free-response questions while developing effective exam strategies.

This course supports the complete, current College Board AP Computer Science A curriculum.
